Test your German with this 5-minute quiz

Test your German

Sometimes you want to do a quick self-analysis to validate that you’re making progress. You want to know that all the effort you are making is getting you closer to your end goal of being fluent in German. If that’s you, then this quick German test is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s a combination of 30 questions across grammar, orthography, and vocabulary topics to help you get a quick assessment of your level.

Take the test in Google Forms (those ads in-between are freaking frustrating, but I can’t get rid of them =/)

If you want to take a more advanced assessment, here are 4 free online German tests

  1. Discover your level with the placements tests from Deutsche Welle. You can take three types of tests — For A1, A2 or B1.
  2. Expath is a language school located in Berlin and offers a 30-minute advanced test with 100 questions that get harder as you progress.
  3. Goethe Institut is one of the premium German-learning schools and offers a German test online for all levels from A1 to C2. It is quite comprehensive, so make sure to block at least 45 minutes of time.
  4. Alpadia Language Schools website offers tests for each level separately. If you get 80% or more in one, then move to the next level until you reach a level that doesn’t meet that threshold.

What’s next?

You are putting all the effort – reading books, listening to German music, speaking German as much as you can and watching German videos and movies. How do you know if you are making a meaningful progress and that your effort is paying off? Testing yourself is definitely an effective method.

Make sure to test yourself once in while to identify your blind spots and improvement areas. Such tests help you validate that your effort is producing results and helping you boost your German skills. That said, these tests can’t define your level with 100% accuracy. Therefore don’t see them as the definitive source of truth. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and have fun!
